Facebook transmits sexual diseases and ruins marriages! Oh really?

Last Friday I met a guy in the club and we got involved in an interesting conversation. I discovered that he is not on Facebook and doesn’t use any social networking sites. Blimey I thought- only my mom is not on Facebook and I can excuse her for that- but only because she is my mom!

Next day, coincidently, I came across an article that made me laugh ‘If You’re Not On Facebook, It’s Most Probably Because You’re A Terrorist’. I emailed it to him straight away as I thought that it would be an interesting follow up to out little chat.

But today Twitter and web is flooded with the headlines "Facebook blamed for rise of syphilis", ‘Facebook to sue over syphilis fiasco’ and a while ago a similar buzz was created around "Facebook being a cause for ruining marriages"

This made me think- if you are "not" on Facebook you must be some kind of weirdo who is planning a terrorist attack; whereas if you "are" on the Facebook your marriage is threatened and you are more likely to get an STD!

All this buzz is absurd. Why are we constantly forgetting that people - ONLY people, should take responsibility about what is happening in their lives! Yes, Facebook has a vast connectivity, ease of access, high levels of exposure of the data and so on. However:

  • if you are likely to cheat on your partner,
  • have unprotected sex,
  • if you let people access your private information easily

then you must be aware and/or ready for any kind of consequence!

Please everyone, let's have some sense here, it is not Facebook's fault and never will be, as long as you keep the track of your own actions.

That's all I have to say...what do you think?
